OK so I have been doing this walk since it started here in Palm Beach County when they started doing it three years ago. The whole reason we started doing the walk was with my dad is does have several mental illness. He was diagnosed when I was about 12 and I have pretty much help him with it since I was about 16. SO this year I decided I was going to get more involved than I have been before. Since most of you know this last 16 month have had a lot of health issues I decided to pursue more things that feel strongly about. This is one of them. Mental illness is a big issues in the U.S. so is the stigma that goes along with having mental illness or taking care of someone who has a mental illness. SO What is NAMI it is an organization that is all over that stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. There are local chapters all over they help people and families deal with the many issues that come with having a mental illness. They have support groups for those that deal with a mental illness and also group's for the family members who are helping those dealing with mental illness. They have a class that runs called family to family. they also have a course for professionals who deal with people with mental illness taught by those who have a mental illness so they can learn what they as professionals can do to help their clients who may be suffering from a mental illness.
So all of this to talk about the NAMI walk this walk is free for the community to attend it has resources for families to learn about mental illness and to find resources for help or to even learn how to get involved to help lift the stigma of mental illness. Now there are walks in different states but if your walk has all happened or you can not attend the walk or just want to support our walk you can register as a virtual walkers or just donate to out team as supporter. 100% of the money raised from the walk goes right back to NAMI of PBC to help us train more people to run classes, do support groups and be able to help others with mental illness. The money is used to rent out space for us to have support meeting, have classes and do fun actives. It also helps us to be able to expand our reach and be able to help more and more people in the next year.
So how can you help well if you are local to the area and have a busniess and would like to be a sponsor which starts at $500 dollars and goes up the basic level would put you on the list of sponsors and on the walk website. If you do not want to or can not donate money you can donate supplies which I can get a list of what we need for you. Also if you are not local but still would like to help you can still sponsor, send the items we need for the walk or even items that we can put in the raffle baskets that we are making for the event to sell tickets for to raffle off.
If you are not a bussniess but still are saying I would like to help you can help every donation helps. First register for the walk you can regsiter as just yourself, make a team of friends, families, and co-workers. If you do not want to start a team you can join one that is already made. Now when you register you will get a link to share this is how you can promote your team and get donations. Even if you get no donations you can still walk it is a free event. If you raise 100 dollars you get a free walk shirt. It is a great event and really supports the coumminty.
